Understanding Degree Classification

In the UK, undergraduate degrees are classified based on your weighted average mark across all assessed modules. The classifications are: First Class (70%+), Upper Second or 2:1 (60-69%), Lower Second or 2:2 (50-59%), Third (40-49%), and Fail (below 40%).

Most graduate employers and postgraduate programmes look for a minimum of a 2:1 classification. Some competitive roles and funded PhD positions require a First.

The US GPA system works on a 4.0 scale where A = 4.0 and F = 0.0. Each course's grade is weighted by its credit hours. A GPA of 3.5+ is generally considered excellent, 3.0-3.5 good, and below 2.0 may result in academic probation.
