The tax impact of overtime

Overtime is taxed exactly the same as regular pay - HMRC does not apply a special rate. But if your extra hours push your annual earnings into a higher tax band, those extra pounds get taxed at 40% instead of 20%. Earners near the £100,000 mark also lose part of their personal allowance, creating an effective 60% rate on income between £100,000 and £125,140. If that is you, salary sacrifice pension contributions are usually the best antidote.
